Worst Decision Award for 2009 goes to…

by - February 3, 2010 - Posted in Offseason

Gerry Fraley at the Dallas Morning News says the worst decision the Cowboys made in 2009 was to dump Nick Folk (as supposed to placing him on the injured reserve list).

What do you think? Was this the stupidest thing Jerry did during the season? Or did you agree with his move in that Nick Folk had lost it and was no longer of any use as a kicker?

As always, give us your thoughts below.

I don't know if it's the worst decision of the season, but I do agree that it was a bad decision. Folk proved that can kick, he was just having an off-year. Give him time to get out of his funk. Injured Reserve would have been a better way to go.

I don't know. I think I would have to say that letting Kevin Burnett walk was the worst decision of 2009. It would have been excusable if there had been someone behind him that was ready to play. Instead, we got to see Barbie Carpenter flailing about all season. So much for that vaunted linebacker depth, eh?

With regards to Folk, that one's easy to pick on because we have the benefit of hindsight. If Suisham hadn't sucked as much as his first go-round with the Cowboys, no one would be saying a peep about the release of Folk. Besides, that could be easily rectified. Provided that he's amenable to returning to the team (unless I missed that he already signed somewhere else).

Don't get me wrong Jerry has made plenty of bad decisions, the biggest of which is his face lift. That one is a doosy! I now think one of the best decisions was the lead Jerry took in the vote to the cut short the CBA. I believe that in the long term a new CBA has to happen for teams with small revenue streams and consistently poor records to survive. With changes in a few areas such as; lowering the percentage of player payroll, and especially that of em-placing a rookie cap on salaries.

The rookie cap is a HUGE must. Those salaries of top draft picks were getting absurd. I really hope it doesn't wind up in a lock out of the 2011 season. That would be a huge gut punch to the momentum that the NFL has picked up recently with its popularity. Even though I'm a bigger fan of college football than pro football, that would still suck personally. Sunday afternoons in the fall are synonymous with football.

Jerry's worst decision came before the Minnesota playoff game. Jerry gave the 2009 Dallas Cowboy defensive line coach Todd Grantham permission to leave the Cowboys for UGA (substituting journeyman-coach Pasqualoni as DL coach) before the Minnesota game and the Vikings made Jerry and our Cowboys pay for this lapse in the GM's playoff judgement.
